Concern about insecurity is widespread. In the 2015 general election campaign the very title of the Conservative party manifesto was ‘A Brighter, More Secure Future.’ Many people simply don’t know what the next week will hold. The unknown is uncertain – and uncertainty breeds insecurity.
Such concerns are shared by the broader population. In/security is not simply the latest political fad restricted to the chattering classes, but resonates with public attitudes. With insecurity such a major problem and so widely recognised, the obvious question to ask is ‘what are the solutions?’
In Secure and Free Compass identifies 5+ ideas from across the political spectrum which provide practical, concrete steps to redress the widely acknowledged problem of socio-economic insecurity and start building a nation that is free because it is secure. The 5+ ideas draw on policy suggestions from organisations as diverse as Bright Blue, the Centre for Social Justice, Civitas, the Fabian Society, Friends of the Earth and The Good Right, plus individual commentators ranging from James Kirkup to Polly Toynbee.
Join Compass and the APPG on Poverty for the launch of this Webb Memorial Trust-funded publication. We welcome attendance from people working across civil society, parliamentarians, researchers and the public.

Dr Michael Orton is a Senior Research Fellow at Warwick University Institute for Employment Research. His research focuses on Work, Welfare and Public Policy and is based on social policy analysis, and core issues of poverty, work/welfare and inequalities. He has over 15 years of experience working in anti-poverty roles in the voluntary sector and local government.
Baroness Ruth Lister is a Labour peer and academic who specialises in work on child poverty, social security and feminism. She is Emeritus Professor of Social Policy at Loughborough University and former director of the Child Poverty Action Group. Baroness Lister is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Poverty.
